Statewide Initiatives: Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) supports multiple statewide initiatives to engage high schools in supporting seniors through the final processes to attend college. All high schools in Oceana participate in these statewide initiatives and are seeing trends of college enrollment increase locally.

October is Michigan College Month, when high schools host college application and financial aid campaigns throughout the month of October. The goal of Michigan College Month is that by the conclusion of October, every graduating senior has submitted at least one college application, applied for at least one scholarship, and filed the FAFSA. Oceana high schools host Application Week activities within the school day in October with support from local admissions offices from Baker College, West Shore Community College, and Muskegon Community College. Representatives assist  students in completing applications to whichever college, technical school, or training fits in with their post-secondary education plan.

The College Cash Campaign is held during the month of November, when supports are in place to assist students in completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and applying for scholarships. Representatives from the local colleges financial aid offices visit schools to assist students with applications and forms.

College Decision Day, held annually on or around May 1, is to recognize high school seniors for their postsecondary educational plans and encourage younger students and families to prepare early for postsecondary education. College Decision Day is designed to coincide with the date that most seniors must inform a college of their plans to enroll. This program helps ensure an upward trend in college participation by celebrating students achievements in local libraries, in the newspaper, and throughout all high schools and communities. Read more information about 2016 College Decision Day here.

Oceana Students in the Workplace is a local job shadowing opportunity that allows high school Juniors to spend half of a school day in a local business, learning about careers and exploring the skills needed to work in that business. Past business participants have included Mercy Lakeshore Hospital, GHSP, Gray and Company, Shelby State Bank, Valley City Metals, Lakeside Rehab, and Arbre Farms.
