MI Student Aid

The State of Michigan offers a variety of Student Aid programs, including the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP), Michigan Competitive Scholarship, and Michigan Tuition Grant. Read below for more information on Michigan Student Aid.

You can create an MiSSG Portal AFTER you have submitted a FAFSA OR if you are eligible for TIP.

TUITION INCENTIVE PROGRAM (TIP)

The Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) provides tuition assistance to students who have received Medicaid for 24 months (in a 36 consecutive month period) between age 9 and high school completion. In addition:

  • Student must complete the FAFSA
  • Student must complete the TIP application (by August 31 of the student’s graduating year) on the MiSSG Portal or by calling 1-888-447-2687.
  • Be enrolled in at least six credit hours at a participating location
  • Be a U.S. citizen and a Michigan resident
  • Must begin using TIP four years after high school

TIP can only be used at participating Michigan colleges and universities.

Phase I of TIP can be used primarily at Community Colleges for certificates and Associate’s degrees.

Phase II of TIP begins once a student earns 56 credit hours and begins working towards a Bachelor’s degree. Phase II provides up to $500 in tuition reimbursement.

MICHIGAN ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

Michigan Achievement Scholarship awards financial aid to high school students in Michigan for public and private universities, community colleges, and training opportunities.

  • Up to $2,000 if student attends an eligible training provider in Michigan, per year, up to two years
  • Up to $2,750 if student attends a Michigan community college, per year, up to three years
  • Up to $4,000 if student attends a Michigan private college or university, per year, up to five years
  • Up to $5,500 if student attends a Michigan public university, per year, up to five years

MICHIGAN TUITION GRANT

The Michigan Tuition Grant provides tuition assistance to students attending private or independent, non-profit colleges. Students can be awarded up to $3,000. Students must:

  • Complete the FAFSA by March 1st
  • Earn a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Be a Michigan resident since July 1 f the previous calendar year

MICHIGAN COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIP

The Michigan Competitive Scholarship awards up to $1,500 to current undergraduate students pursuing their first degree who received a score of at least 1200 on the SAT. The scholarship can be applied to community colleges and public or private colleges. Students must:

  • Complete the FAFSA by March 1st
  • Earn a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Be a Michigan resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year

FOSTERING FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP

Fostering Features Scholarships provides tuition assistance for students who were in foster care. Students may be awarded up to $3,000 for a community college or a public or private college. Deadline for the program is June 30. Students must:

  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Student must have bee in Michigan foster care on or after their 13th birthday
  • Must demonstrate financial need

CHILDREN OF VETERANS TUITION GRANT

The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant provides assistance to children of veterans who are permanently disabled, missing in action, or deceased. Students may be awarded up to $2,800 and can be used at a community college and public or private colleges. Students must:

  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Complete program specific application (on MiSSG Portal)

POLICE OFFICER AND FIREFIGHTER SURVIVORS GRANT

The Police Officer and Firefighter survivor tuition awards of children of police officers or firefighters killed in the line of duty. Award amount varies and can be used at a community college and public or private colleges. Student must

  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Complete program specific application (on MissG Portal)
  • Must demonstrate financial need
